Tai Chi vs. Qi Gong: What’s the Difference?

Updated: Oct 24

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are both ancient Chinese mind-body practices that blend together flowing movements, intentional breathing, and guided meditation to cultivate and balance our vital energy “qi” (pronounced “chee”) for improved well-being. Though Tai Chi and Qi Gong are similar in their low-impact movements and purpose, there are key differences that set them apart from one another. CGI Holistic Fitness & Spa in Closter, New Jersey, breaks down what each means and its benefits.

What is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong is the broad system of ancient, mind-body practices that aims to balance the body’s qi. Often more beginner-friendly than Tai Chi, Qi Gong can involve single, simple moves that are repeated until the desired benefit is felt by the participant. It can also stand alone as a static breathing practice, either narrowing in on a specific area of the body or remaining more generalized. This flexibility in its methods makes it highly accessible and adaptable for people of all physical conditions, especially those with limited movement. With a focus on health, mind-body connection, and dissolving qi blockages, Qi Gong centers on overall wellness rather than martial arts.

What is Tai Chi?

Despite its moderate movement requirements, Tai Chi is a form of martial art and also considered a more advanced form of Qi Gong through its energy improvement. Those who participate learn and memorize a complex series of choreographed, graceful, and water-like moves that cascade into each other. For this reason, the practice requires significant discipline and memorization skills on the part of the participant. Tai Chi often also involves stepping and weight shifts, causing the entire body to work as a unit. Though it is primarily a developmental practice for further martial arts by building internal power and self-defense skills, Tai Chi can be used on its own for its excellent health benefits, like improved balance and mobility.

Which is for me?

Whether you set out to explore Tai Chi or Qi Gong depends on your wellness goals and mobility. If you aim to gently improve physical conditions such as balance and motor skills, Tai Chi could be beneficial for you. If energetic shifting with limited movement is more appealing, then Qi Gong could be the holistic approach you need. Qi Gong, additionally, could be a stepping stone to the more advanced movements of Tai Chi. Both, however, are open to beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.
